Jens’ Living Room, By Mara L.

Another shot from Jens’ new apartment. This time, I was allowed to take the photo, albeit not without instruction. I wanted Jens in the picture (he’s the almost invisible shadow in the mirror). But of course, he ‘directed’ the picture. I felt like a rather sophisticated computer, who can follow all kinds of commands.

So, this is what part of his living room looks like. He bought a rather beautiful Case Study Chaise from Modernica, one of my much liked brands for simple modern classics. You see some of it, in Linen Chili on the right. He also has some original steel stools from the 1930ies. The one in the photo, however, has been badly messed up by someone who tried to repair the wooden seat. Most deplorable. So now the seat has to be covered up. You see the stool in a large mirror, and some of the tea utensils I used to make myself comfortable.

Jens’ Kitchen, By Mara L.

Now that Jens has his new apartment, he finally allowed me to cook for him here in New York. In the past, I would only be allowed to invite him for dinner back home in Europe, when we meet up over the summer. Anyway, I’m quite struck with how pretty his kitchen is, it is all white and yellow. And he also had some beautiful cookies to show to me, which his companion (I am not to mention any specifics about her) had received as a gift.

I decided that everything I would prepare would have to fit the color scheme of the kitchen. So I started with yellow tomato salad, the ingredients of which I bought nearby, at the Garden of Eden which I quite like – as far as Manhattan goes, this is rather good food shopping (in terms of my new ranking – four stars: ****).

While Jens made the photos, I decided that it was time for a small-scale apartment photo-project. I haven’t yet fully persuaded Jens of this, since of course he considers it as too mundane for his artistic sensibilities. But I think apartments are interesting, and am planning to document some of the details of this beautiful new space near Central Park.

Thai Market, By Mara L.

I watched Thai Market (here), now one of my favorite restaurants, grow since it first opened in 2007 on Amsterdam Avenue (between 107th and 108th). The neighborhood was fully ready for a restaurant with some flair and style, but easy enough for your daily, no-big-investment dining needs.

Thai Market is a breath of fresh air. Inside, the main wall is a large photo mural of food stalls in the streets in Bangkok, and there is more large scale street photography all over the place. Combine that with bright red, and you have the attempt to achieve a modern look. Admittedly, it’s rather inconsistent, for some of the red comes in umbrellas, and so on. So, you shouldn’t look too closely at the décor. But the feel is there: Thai Market is a contemporary, unpretentious, and un-costumy place.

The food is the same: let’s call it contemporary New York Thai. Beautiful and pure. The vegetables are crisp and fresh, you see all the ingredients on your plate. They have an incredibly inexpensive lunch special for 8$. This sounds like it has to be fast food, but it is not. It’s well-prepared ‘real’ food. I persuaded Jens to meet me at Thai Market for a late lunch. He had tiny Vegetable Spring Rolls with carrot sauce and Green Curry, and insists that he shall always have the same. My own, rather unspectacular choice usually is Kow Pad (fried rice with various vegetables, chicken, and so on). For me, Kow Pad is the kind of food that is basic in the best kind of way, like pasta: you can always eat it, and even though it’s simple, there are a million things that can be better or worse about it. Thai Market’s Kow Pads are perfect: light and lemony, entirely ungreasy. However, I’ve also had more sophisticated, and very delicious things in the past. Some of their appetizers are quite authentic, and worth trying. I particularly liked Goong cha nam pla, a beautifully prepared raw shrimp in lime juice.

Thai Market gets my best ranking, five stars: *****
