On arrival, it seemed to me that half of the planet’s population descends upon the shores of Southern England during the summer. Or rather, upon some particular spots. Less than two miles off, however, away from the the crowds: nobody! A lone passerby told me that this is what’s great about Cornwall, even at the height of the season. Agreed.

In the midst of the multifaceted horror of modern air travel, this is one exception I happened upon the other week: bmi regional. Small but fast planes from some twenty plus years ago, and a flight attendant who apparently modeled herself after a 1960s movie star — Cool Britannia at its best. Out of more than half a dozen plane trips during the past few weeks, this was the only one that was on time. When I booked it, I read that an airline this small cannot survive in today’s market.
